EARLY DEVELOPMENT

  • Honourable Dr Peya Mushelenga was born and grew up at Oshigambo, northern Namibia, in Oshikoto Region
  • He attended Primary school at Oshigambo and attained his secondary education at Oluno Senior Secondary School, now called Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo Senior Secondary School.

POLITICS

  • Honourable Dr Mushelenga was moulded into politics and political activism at a tender age. He joined SWAPO in 1984, and a few years later, he became actively involved in students’ politics, under the Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO).
  • He was elected as Member of the Central Committee of SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL), in 1997 and re-elected in 2002 and 2007.  He retired from SWAPO Party Youth League at the 2012 Congress, having exceeded the age limit.
  • In August 2002 he was elected Member of the Central Committee of SWAPO Party, becoming the youngest Member of the Central Committee by then. He was re-elected in 2007, 2012 and 2017.
  • Honourable Dr Mushelenga was elected to the Namibian National Assembly during the 2004 general elections, and re-elected 2009, 2014 and 2019 general elections.
  • He was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, by His Excellency President Hifikepunye Pohamba, on 21 March 2010.
  • He was appointed Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation by His Excellency President Dr Hage Geingob, on 21 March 2015
  • Honourable Dr Mushelenga was appointed Minister of Urban and Rural Development by His Excellency President Dr Hage Geingob, on 08 February 2018.
  • He was appointed Minister of Information and Communication Technology by His Excellency President Dr Hage Geingob, on 21 March 2020.

    EDUCATION
  •  Academically, Honourable Dr Mushelenga has no competitors. He belongs to his own league. Believe me! Your son of the soil has completed the following 11 university degrees
  • Degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History and Political Studies, University of Namibia (UNAM), which he completed at the age of 20;
  • Degree of Baccalaureus Juris (B Juris), University of Namibia;
  • Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Economics (BA Econ), Open University of Tanzania (OUT);
  • Degree of Bachelor of Education (B Ed), Open University of Tanzania;
  • Degree of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Honours, University of Namibia;
  • Degree of Honours Bachelor of Arts (Hons BA) in International Politics, University of South Africa (UNISA);
  • Degree of Master of Arts (MA) in International Politics, University of South Africa. His thesis is: Foreign policy-making in Namibia, the dynamics of a smallness of a state;
  • Degree of Master of Laws (LLM) in International Law, University of Namibia. His thesis is: Small states and the undercurrents of compliance with International Law, the case of Namibia;
  • Degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA), Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI). He received the Best Performer Award.  His thesis is: Analysing the impact of inflation on the developments in the financial sector of Namibia.
  •  Degree of Master of Science (MSc) in Finance, University of London, 2020. His thesis is: Trends of revenue collections in Namibia since independence (1990 – 2020) and their impact on economic development;
  • Degree of Doctor of Literature and Philosophy (D Litt et Phil) in International Politics, University of South Africa. His thesis is: The economic diplomacy of small state, the case of Namibia.

 

  • Honourable Dr Mushelenga is an admitted Legal Practitioner (attorney) of the High Court.

 
ACADEMIC CONTRIBUTION

  • Honourable Dr Mushelenga is also a researcher and published author, with over 20 academic publications, in a form of chapters in books, articles in peer review journals and seminar papers.
  • In addition, while at high school he authored a poetry book in Oshindonga language, titled Nando Na li toke, which was published some years later. These poem collections are currently used in senior secondary schools in Namibia.
  • As his academic contribution to the nation, since 2016 Honourable Dr Mushelenga has been lecturing one or two modules per year at the University of Namibia at post-graduate level on pro bono basis (meaning without any payment whatsoever).

INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE

    • Honourable Dr Mushelenga has attended numerous international conferences, including sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, and has travelled to more than sixty (60) countries in the world.
